Carway International 6-a-side Tournament

In a shocking turn of events on Wednesday 18.07.07 the International 6-a-side Tournament held at Carway's state of the art playing fields has been cancelled. This has caused distress and anger not only in the heartlands of Wales but throughout the globe. Teams from South America, Asia and Europe have all had to cancel flights to Carway and also the hotels that have been prebooked. A Carway spokesman has told of the impact this has had on the local community "This is a disaster for our transport sector and the hotel industry, only this morning F.C. Santos cancelled their hotel and fleet of coaches from 'Dai Bros buses'; earlier in the week Egyptian side Zamalek brought their Welsh holiday to end as they left on Wednesday furious with the decision by the Carmarthenshire League's top brass. They have been in Carway for over a month acclimatising to the altitude and preparing for the tournament. Star player Hossam Hassan had this to say "We are very disappointed with the league's very narrow minded viewpoint, I could have been relaxing on the banks of the Nile, instead I have been working my b*lls off just for the chance of playing in this prestigious tournament and they tell me I've wasted my time. I will be considering a fatwa." A league spokesman David Bumface told us earlier "tough sh*t we are in charge, and it matters not how many hearts we break. We do not have compassion for anybody and we like to make ourselves seem important. This Tournament would have been a great idea and has a long history, but at the end of the day, what do we care." Whatever your viewpoint the will be no fun in Carway this Saturday, a bit like every other Saturday. It could have been so different. There is further disappointment to be had, as this web page was created to promote the tournament and now it just seems like a waste of time. Gutted.

Come one, come all. It's that time of year again where you have an opportunity to bring great fame to West End United. With over 32 top ranking teams competing from far and wide, the day promises to be a spectacle of flowing football.

West End are entering two magnificent teams with chic skills in abundance, as they look to walk away with the Tournament Trophy and two hundred big ones!. Do you want to be part of one of the glory? Do you want to participate in this exhibition of elegance?

If you want to strut your stuff against the big guns, prove your metal on the pitch or even flaunt your flair against the farmers. This is the place to do it.

The Tournament takes place on the 21st of July. That's the third Saturday in the month and it promises to be a jamboree of just simply ferocious football. Don't miss out!!!!!!!

The teams consist of 8 players each and it's £12.00 per team. If you would like to take part and have the images of your victorious selves on this page it's simple, and I might add painless. Season 2007 - 08 Star Cup Special

It's that time of year again, the grass seeds are just bedding down in Penygaer Playing Fields and it's already time to trample over them in the madness that is the Llanelli Star Cup! It's something we've all been waiting for, from young to old, from Ollie to Eddie, everyone loves the Star Cup.

The groups have been decided and for once the gods of chance appear to be smiling on our beloved West End as we avoid any tricky ties. As in every competition where there is a round robin style set up you will encounter a Group Of Death and this year is no different. Make your own mind up but Group 3 is looking like a potential battleground for the competing teams. All we can say is "Up the End!"

Season 2007 - 08 Pre-Season Friendlies

With one friendly down and however many remaining (not sure of anything) West End has a total of 1 friendly points.

With a delicious goal from Justin late in the second half that seemed to seal victory, it was all looking soooo good. Unfortunately the 'win in the bag' was not to be. Matthew Armstrong lived up to his name with a strong arm on the ball to conceded a penalty and put the win in doubt. Up stepped a rag from the opposition (some Pontadawe side) who tried to give the 'eyes' to Simon in the goals and slot the ball home, but it was saved wonderfully only to rebound on to the same rag's foot for an easy tap in. The game ended in a draw, glory was not to be although returning alive and unravaged from the Hill Billy community will always be regarded as a success.

The game started well with pace and endeavour being shown by Johnny "one in, all in" Ginge and Tarl "Tyrone" Taylor, and this was accompanied by some lovely midfield play from a young Stephen Preece showing maturity beyond his years and Desmond Decker showing maturity relevant to his age. Throw in a few crafted long balls from Armstrong and the mix was set and ready to lay. With chance after chance going begging from a combination of awful refereeing decisions, poor finishing and goalkeeping that was adequate to the shooting, the foundations of victory never got laid.

On the plus side some defensive doggery by Jason 'no goals' Harding and a stubborn Michael 'solsk' Jayne mad sure there was no way the upstarts from the valley were ever going to trouble the excellence that was in the goals. Our new signing Justin (he's so good he only has a first name) showed enthusiasm and resolve as he took to the wing like a duck to water, perfectly mirroring the efforts of Ollie 'not in the air' Jilsusman on the other flank. The half time whistle came just in time for the other side as the pressure was telling. It was a hot day and Patrick Butcher's delicate ginger skin was beginning to suffer in the heat as he forgot his factor 99 suncream needed for his condition.

One change in the half time break, the legend that is Schildt had a breather and got ready to prepare for something special in the second half. The second period was very much like the first only it was Patrick 'barn door' Butchers doing all the missing with seven chances falling at his toblerone feet and strawberry blond hair a goal look a million miles away. The opposition was broken, Tarl's trickery had spellbinding powers over these lesser players and his carefully glided corners were certain assists if only Mr Butchers could leave them for someone else. With 10 minutes to go the game was turned on it's head. One substitution proved to be decisive as Ollie took his bow, Michael Schildt tore on to the scene and within seconds he had distracted the defenders enough for Justin to steal in and finish. It looked all over and with Michael "Pele" Schildt seeing his left footed drive from a fantastic through ball from Armstrong dip just over the top hand corner it all looked rosy. Of course as you know from the above the events that followed it was not to be our day.

Being dropped by the "ever wise" Gary Jones for the quarter final against Penyfan in the Star Cup only to play as a bare 11 turned up and stealing the show with a masterful performance and two penalty saves, also going on to another majestic display for the Semis and picking up the Player of the Tournament Award with a rather large photo in the Star. Get in there!

Best West End Memory for the wrong reasons:

Watching the 2nd XI against Steel and seeing 3 foul throws in a row (steel twice us once, shocking), also being dropped by Gary Jones and watching Eddie conceded direct from a throw in 30 yards out against Abergwili, my darkest day. Oh yes, any Pat Butchers back pass.

Stuart Box for his knack of being rather lucky each time he has a shot, as you can beat skill but you can never beat luck.

Any one of the ever changing back four, if you can't have a laugh at the back why play there. It's normally trench humour.

In my under 16s days against Suburbs, on the edge of the 18 yard box I controlled a long ball with my knee swiveled and performed an audacious bicycle kick and caught the ball with the top side of my laces and sent the ball 30 yards up at a 70 degree angle only for it to come down and clip the underside of the bar and go in for a truly phenomenal goal. I have witnesses! And it was my only goal.

You've worked long and hard to get here, your game has reached unprecedented heights, you are complete. However it wasn't always like that, the route was long and hard, the struggle great. Here we have rare archive images of West End Heroes in the early years of their development:

A Brief History

West End United started on the fields of Parc Howard where every Sunday afternoon loads of football games were being played, this then developed into hiring local sports halls during winter months where we had anywhere from 12 – 30 people turning up to play, this led to playing a few full games against local pub teams. Several of us were playing in various local sides and got round to talking about maybe setting up our on team, this came into being in 1989 when we were accepted into the Carmarthenshire league. Some of the people who were instrumental in this were Ray Jones, Gary Dennis, Greg Phillips, Mark Samuel, Anthony Johns and little Dai!

The name was derived from the fact that we had planned to have the Princess Head as our HQ which was in West End!, this was to change however with goalkeeper Anthony Johns taking over The Brecon and it was from here that we acquired our first kit, a very fetching figure hugging all white number.
Our first league game at Penygaer was a 3-0 victory over Ponthenri, with goals from Carl Chowings, Johnny Richards and Greg Phillips. The side was captained by Greg Phillips and managed by Ray Jones who at 22 was the youngest first team manager in league and probably is a record he still holds. Of the team that played that day Ray Jones, Gareth Jones Alec Davies and Gary Dennis are still involved with the club.

Our debut in the Star cup also came that year with the draw pitching the new boys against league and west wales cup champions Trostre, we had the cheek to take the lead with a great strike from Johnny Richards but ended up losing 9-1!!
Our first local derby against E+W brought a fine 3-2 victory and in Nov we stole the Star headlines with a 1-0 senior cup victory over Penygaer who were playing in div.1, Chris Marsh providing the winner. The next round almost brought a great victory over league leaders Dafen despite going behind early on, Dai Rees brought the sides level and it was with 2 mins left that John Frater scored the winner.

The final league table for that year saw the club finish 7th having won 9, drawn 4 and lost 7 games in the league. The second year saw the dawn of the reserve side under Dai Evans and they kicked off with a trip to Drefach. This season was to prove a spring board for future success with the foundations being laid with a strong social side developing which has become one of the many great features of a club which has exceeded all expectations and enjoyed many successes in gaining promotion and winning the challenge cup on 3 occasions. The demise of local sides Penygaer and New Dock also helped with established players from both having joined.

The Third year saw the first silverware coming to the club, the first team winning the Division 3 title, under new managers Alec Davies and Huw Morris with Ray Jones having stood down midway through the season with the club undefeated at the top of the league. The reserves also clinched the div3 title following a great win in a 2-legged play off against Carmarthen town. Having lost 2-0 away it was a tough ask against a strong Carmarthen side but 2 goals from Dai Roberts who benefited from long clearance from keeper Nigel Pike and a brilliant strike from Gary John saw the side claim the title under managers Simon Williams and Phil Jones.
The next year saw the club install Phil Davies as manager and it was from here that the club became a solid, fit and entertaining side with some great players eager to join not only for the football but for the social side which was as important to everyone this is borne out by the fact that once players joined most have stayed for many years and still enjoy nights out long after they have finished playing with the friendships made lasting a lifetime.

Some the best players to have graced the club are Phil ‘Tids’ Jones. Ants Johns, Peter Warner, Gary Jones, Phil Davies but without doubt the best is the great Dean Swan who tormented defences in every game he played. My apologies to all the other players who have graced the club over the years.
The club has also benefited from the hard work and dedication from many long serving members including Ray Jones, Alec Davies, Rich Anthony, Steve Mears, Jason Rudall, Peter Warner, Gareth Jones and Gary Dennis to name but a few.
The next big event was promotion to Div1 under Phil Davies where the club became established and this enabled the reserves to climb into Res. Div1 where they are now established.

The club has had several HQ’s but none have proved to be as good as the Electric Club were West End have been based for many years. The arrival of Gary Jones as manager provided a much needed injection of new blood into the club with several new players joining and with it the first of the four challenge cup wins. The promotion of Matthew Morgan to manager saw the club struggle in his first year with points gained on the final game saving the club from relegation, his second year saw the club win the title and the challenge cup, the next year saw the club grace the premier division for the first time, this was to prove a difficult step and saw the club relegated for the first time. West End I am sure remain quite unique with the fact that both teams in 18 years having only been relegated once each.
The hope for next season will be the setting up of a junior section something which the club has had in the past but disappointingly failed to continue but with a squad getting older each year this is now a priority.

With the club now under the helm of Jason Rudall and Steve Mears and Peter Warner having returned to run the reserves, the next season needs to see an improvement in both the playing and social side of the club, but with the people who are involved this should be easily realised.
